GENE: THE MAN
Gene E. Johnson Sr. was born to Jim Stanley and Eva Mae Johnson on February 1, 1936. At the tender age of six, his mother departed from this world, leaving Gene to grow and develop with his grandfather John Johnson.
GENE: THE HUSBAND
Gene met his wife Katherine Johnson in 1953. After courting for two years, they married in 1955. Gene and Katherine had three sons: Gene, Victor and Gregory Johnson.
GENE: THE PATRIARCH
Gene was not your average man. He was loved by all who knew him. He loved his grandkids, who affectionately called him “Granddad” or “Poppa J”. He loved to tell stories and spend time with his grands and great grands. He never missed a chance to take a picture or show a picture.
GENE: THE HARD WORKER
Gene was the holder of many jobs until he became a Longshoreman. He took pride in his job. He loved climbing up in the machine. He spoke about the port until his last days. His story he would tell was he was the only employee who could stand up and still operate the crane. Gene, “Skeeter”, worked for International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA) until he retired at the age of sixty-two.
GENE: THE WARRIOR
Gene was fearless and always had a sharp comeback. If you knew him, you knew he never had a problem telling you how he felt. Gene loved GOD and never lost faith; he was a strong believer.
